Case Closed

Mr. Miller, the prosecuting attorney, rose from his seat amidst a full courtroom.

โ€œNow, Ms. Clarkson,โ€ he began, addressing the young woman on the witness stand. โ€œWhile the defendant denies betraying his wife of fifteen years, you maintain that you and he had an affair, is that correct?โ€

The beautiful woman sniffled performatively into her tissue. โ€œYes,โ€ she said.

Across the courtroom, Kyle Lewton sat at the defendantโ€™s desk. He had positioned himself at an angle so that he could hold hands with his wife, Natalie, who sat in the public gallery behind him. She held his one hand in her two on top of the railing that separated them. Both watched tensely.

Mr. Miller moved out from behind his desk and into the open area. โ€œTell us about this affair. How did it begin?โ€

โ€œHeโ€ฆโ€ Ms. Clarkson paused for emphasis,โ€ seduced me.โ€

The entire court silently gaspedโ€ฆ except for Natalie, who erupted in laughter.

Kyle sat up in his seat and looked back at her. โ€œThat could have happened!โ€ he bawled. โ€œI can be seductive!โ€

Natalie stifled her laughter and patted her husbandโ€™s hand. โ€œOf course,โ€ she placated.

The judgeโ€™s gavel rang out. โ€œOrder! Order in the court!โ€ he bellowed.

Natalie went silent, but couldnโ€™t keep from smiling. Kyle slouched in his chair, crossed his arms, and pouted.

โ€œThank you, your honor,โ€ Mr. Miller said, and returned his attention to the witness stand. โ€œMs. Clarkson, how did Mr. Lewton seduce you?โ€

โ€œWell, heโ€ฆ just said all the right thingsโ€ฆโ€

Natalie burst out laughing again.

โ€œโ€ฆand heโ€ฆ he listened to me!โ€

Natalieโ€™s laughter echoed down the courthouse corridor.
