Mr. Miller, the prosecuting attorney, rose from his seat amidst a full courtroom.
“Now, Ms. Clarkson,” he began, addressing the young woman on the witness stand. “While the defendant denies betraying his wife of fifteen years, you maintain that you and he had an affair, is that correct?”
The beautiful woman sniffled performatively into her tissue. “Yes,” she said.
Across the courtroom, Kyle Lewton sat at the defendant’s desk. He had positioned himself at an angle so that he could hold hands with his wife, Natalie, who sat in the public gallery behind him. She held his one hand in her two on top of the railing that separated them. Both watched tensely.
Mr. Miller moved out from behind his desk and into the open area. “Tell us about this affair. How did it begin?”
“He…” Ms. Clarkson paused for emphasis,” seduced me.”
The entire court silently gasped… except for Natalie, who erupted in laughter.
Kyle sat up in his seat and looked back at her. “That could have happened!” he bawled. “I can be seductive!”
Natalie stifled her laughter and patted her husband’s hand. “Of course,” she placated.
The judge’s gavel rang out. “Order! Order in the court!” he bellowed.
Natalie went silent, but couldn’t keep from smiling. Kyle slouched in his chair, crossed his arms, and pouted.
“Thank you, your honor,” Mr. Miller said, and returned his attention to the witness stand. “Ms. Clarkson, how did Mr. Lewton seduce you?”
“Well, he… just said all the right things…”
Natalie burst out laughing again.
“…and he… he listened to me!”
Natalie’s laughter echoed down the courthouse corridor.
