Mr. Miller, the prosecuting attorney, rose from his seat amidst a full courtroom.
โNow, Ms. Clarkson,โ he began, addressing the young woman on the witness stand. โWhile the defendant denies betraying his wife of fifteen years, you maintain that you and he had an affair, is that correct?โ
The beautiful woman sniffled performatively into her tissue. โYes,โ she said.
Across the courtroom, Kyle Lewton sat at the defendantโs desk. He had positioned himself at an angle so that he could hold hands with his wife, Natalie, who sat in the public gallery behind him. She held his one hand in her two on top of the railing that separated them. Both watched tensely.
Mr. Miller moved out from behind his desk and into the open area. โTell us about this affair. How did it begin?โ
โHeโฆโ Ms. Clarkson paused for emphasis,โ seduced me.โ
The entire court silently gaspedโฆ except for Natalie, who erupted in laughter.
Kyle sat up in his seat and looked back at her. โThat could have happened!โ he bawled. โI can be seductive!โ
Natalie stifled her laughter and patted her husbandโs hand. โOf course,โ she placated.
The judgeโs gavel rang out. โOrder! Order in the court!โ he bellowed.
Natalie went silent, but couldnโt keep from smiling. Kyle slouched in his chair, crossed his arms, and pouted.
โThank you, your honor,โ Mr. Miller said, and returned his attention to the witness stand. โMs. Clarkson, how did Mr. Lewton seduce you?โ
โWell, heโฆ just said all the right thingsโฆโ
Natalie burst out laughing again.
โโฆand heโฆ he listened to me!โ
Natalieโs laughter echoed down the courthouse corridor.
